About Lex O. McMillan III, Ph.D., President Emeritus
Lex McMillan provided leadership for the advancement and support of independent higher education for more than 37 years. He established a reputation as a skilled administrator and inspiring leader; a creative strategic thinker; and an effective teacher, writer, and public speaker.
As President of Albright College (2005-2017), Dr. McMillan led the institution to greater strength and security during a time of challenge resulting from the Great Recession of 2008-09 and dramatic changes in the landscape for higher education. During his tenure, the College completed two successful comprehensive campaigns that secured more than $100 million in charitable gifts to support major capital improvements, establish new academic programs, and increase resources for student aid. Upon his retirement, the Board of Trustees honored Dr. McMillan with the title of “President Emeritus” and named the College’s student center for him.
McMillan previously served as Vice President for College Relations at Gettysburg College (1993-2004) where he provided staff leadership for a six-year, $100 million comprehensive campaign that exceeded its goal by $11 million. He was responsible for the overall management and direction of the College's alumni and parent relations, external affairs, and resource development programs. He served as Executive Director of Development at his undergraduate alma mater, Washington and Lee University (1987-1993) where he provided staff leadership in a campaign that exceeded its $127 million goal by more than $20 million. Earlier, he served as Director of Public Relations and then Director of Development and at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia (1979-1987).
Active in community affairs and professional associations, McMillan has served on the Boards of the Council for Independent Colleges and the United Way of Berks County, as a member of the NCAA Division III Presidents Council, on the Advisory Board of the Wye Seminars, and as a board member and former chair of the Adams County (PA) Economic Development Corporation. He also served as vice chair of the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation Board and was an active Rotarian and officer during his service to Gettysburg College. Since retiring in 2017, he served for six years on the board of the Adams Rescue Mission, on the boards of Healthy Adams Bicycle/Pedestrian, Inc., and the Refugee Resettlement Partnership of Gettysburg. For several years leading up to the 2020 census, he was an active volunteer with FairDistrictsPA, advocating for a nonpartisan method of Congressional redistricting. Active in his church, St. Francis Xavier, he is a former member of the choir and a current lector.
In 2022 he published Golfing with Lewis and Clark: My Rediscovery of America, an account of his nearly 10,000 mile, 40-day, 2017 trip across the country, retracing the Lewis and Clark expedition, playing 16 rounds of golf, and interviewing people about the state of our country.
He received his bachelor's degree, cum laude, from Washington and Lee, and a master’s degree in English from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia, his home state. He holds the doctorate in English literature from the University of Notre Dame. He is married to Dorothy Argoe McMillan; they have five grown children and eight grandchildren.
